Spell Ball 2018 is March 27th, 2018
Spell Ball 2018 will be at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2423 W. 26th St. Joplin MO on
Tuesday evening, March 27, 2018. Teams should come at 5:30; the program begins at 6:00.
What is Spell Ball?
Our signature fundraiser—Joplin NALA Read’s Spell Ball—combines spelling and baseball. Teams of three from businesses or clubs or individuals sign on with an entry fee of $150 and are given a word list to study (if they wish!)
How Does it Work?
Teams are placed in one of two leagues, representing their league in just one inning of play. In each inning three words are pitched to each team. Team members consult with each other and decide on the spelling. A correct answer scores a run for their league. Teams are encouraged to bring along fans to cheer for them, and there is no entry fee for attending Spell Ball.
What if I'm Not On a Team?
In-between inning entertainment showcases Karen’s Dance Troupe, Becky Browne’s Tai Chi, Ketchup/Mustard Race, Audience Participation Game, and NALA Students Pitching.
In addition, the Dishes-Around- the-World- Bake-Sale complements the excellent food prepared by the Ladies of St. Paul’s for your enjoyment at the concession area. You’ll also find Silent Auction
items you can’t live without at the Spell Ball.
How Can I Sponsor Spell Ball?
We invite sponsors of each inning at a fee of $200. Their logo will be featured along with an announcement at the beginning of their inning. Sponsors may provide videos or a person from their organization in a one-minute advertisement.

The goal of this event is to let the community know about the free help we offer adults who need to improve their reading, math, or English as a Second Language skills. In addition, we look forward to raising $10,000 so that we can continue to offer this help to our students. Students like Tom. Tom knew he wanted to read better so he could move up in his job situation and read at the Bible study he attended. But he was hesitant about coming in. Then one day, he took the plunge and walked in to ask for help. Working with his tutor, Tom has progressed from a 5th grade reading level to a 9th grade. The potential was there—he just needed a hand up—which beats a handout any day. And he continues studying!
